Isabel is a Registered Dental Hygienist and one of the practice owners of Healthy Smile Dental based out of Brampton. Prior to opening her clinic 10 years ago she wore many hats. After graduating from Dental Hygiene in 2003 she worked in various practice settings and she truly fell in love with her profession when she began teaching dental hygiene at Medix School. Since graduating from Dental Hygiene Isabel has obtained a teaching to adult certificate and began her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene.  Isabel is passionate about her business and more importantly about making sure every patient who leaves Healthy Smile is happy and feels like family!

How has Covid 19 affected your business?

On March 15 the team at Healthy Smile made the hard decision to close the practice temporarily to help safeguard our staff and patients. Little did we know that two weeks would quickly turn into two months with no definitive opening date. As a dental office, we have always operated using universal precautions and strictly adhering to infection prevention and control (IPAC) measures. A lot of time and energy goes into making sure that we are practicing in a safe manor when providing oral health services to all of our patients. Due to uncertainties surrounding Covid 19 we felt it best to follow our Regulatory Colleges recommendation that all non emergent care be suspended.

How have you adapted or pivoted your business?

At this point everyone is mainly working from home. Checking messages at the office regularly and checking in on patients. The clinic is available for patients for critical emergencies only, by appointment.  In addition, being available to triage over the phone.  We are ensuring that our social media and websites are updated regularly with any new information. Connecting to our patients is a top priority we take pride in maintaining this important connection by delivering oral health supplies until we are able to see them again.

What are you doing to prepare your self for re opening?

These last two months have been a roller coaster of fear, uncertainties, yet filled with gratitude; time for self reflection and growth. Continuing education has been on the top of the list. Much time and energy has been spent in reading about Covid 19 and how to operate once we are given the green light while adhering to public health recommendations of social distancing. Ensuring personal protective equipment for staff will be available for opening, fit tests for masks, learning how to properly screen patients and researching air filtration system for the office so that we can all breath a little easier!  One of the best tasks that has been completed was the full decluttering of the office.  Something that we never did have time for. There is something so gratifying about being able to declutter and organize! Amidst this planning and preparation we realized quickly that the plans we had for growth of space in our tiny little clinic would come sooner than later. It is with great pleasure to announce that when we reopen our doors you will be walking in to a new and larger renovated space.  A space that will offer our staff the ability to social distance and feel safe and a space that will offer the same to each and every one of our patients. It is and will always remain our number one priority to offer our patients the best treatment possible in a loving and safe environment. Although this is a massive undertaking, initial plans have been in the works for over a year. No better time like the present to grow to better serve our community!

How are you managing personally?

The toughest of all questions to answer. Some days I am a shark! Other days I want to hide under my blanket and leave the grown up work to other people. Having three kids at home and homeschooling has been very difficult. My husband has too spent the last 6 weeks working from home. Our routine flew out the window that day in March. Gym days for sanity came to a screeching halt, gatherings with friends and family ceased to exist. Family rooms became home offices, entertainment spaces became gyms and dinner tables became a place for schooling. The house has been busy and down right crazy and yet some how it has given us a much needed break from our normal chaotic schedules and we are making the most of this new normal and counting our many blessings.

How to reach me

Until we reopen I am readily available to offer oral health consults over the phone, via zoom or through messaging. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. We will be ready for you when the time comes to reopen and we can’t wait to share the transformation of Healthy Smile with you.
