Meet Sheryl

Sheryl has always had a passion for fashion.  She has tweaked that style over the years in order to adapt to her life in the moment;  full time mom, full time teacher, and everything in between.  Now she loves to do the same for others.  After 31 years as an educator she has joined cabi Clothing as an independent stylist with an in home and mobile boutique serving women's style and fashion needs.  cabi Clothing was founded in 2001 as a fashion brand by and for women.

How has Covid 19 affected your business?

During March, my business was completely stalled.  Understandably, women cancelled their scheduled in-home fashion experiences and I cancelled personal style appointments that had been booked at my home boutique.  I spent time reaching out to friends and clients simply to check in and connect.  As April settled in, I noticed a shift and found that slowly, women began to shop.  I was humbled and encouraged by the support I received by my faithful clients and friends.

How have you adapted or pivoted your business?

I know that for some women, "retail therapy" has great value.  A cute pair of joggers or a bright new top worn on a ZOOM call can do wonders for your confidence.  On the other hand, I am sensitive to the financial concerns that many have now.   As always, I approach my clients with understanding and respect.  It's been fun to have ZOOM gatherings with groups of friends simply to catch up with each other and have a few laughs.  I am learning new ways to share the fashion experience and style tips with women by investing in new equipment and embracing technology.  I partner with my sister-in-law and fellow stylist Nancy on social media (@in2cabi) and our broader GTA style team, to offer fun style posts and videos.

What are you doing to prepare yourself when you re-open your business?

My business is open now!  cabi has always provided a multitude of channels for me to serve my clients.  I have simply shifted the emphasis from seeing clients in person, to seeing them virtually.  Women are able to shop with me online, via my app cabiTap, through email, and by gathering virtually with a group of friends or just one on one.  I am also looking to launch a Cheddar Up page for my season ending sale which will safely allow access to discounted samples for all clients.  I have committed to continue my business for the Fall'20 season and I look forward to seeing the new collection in late July.

How are you managing personally?

Everyday is a little different, but I'm doing ok.  Initially, I was completely frozen with fear and uncertainty.  I couldn't  get my head around how to move forward with my business.  Taking care of myself and my family was the only priority.  Over the last few weeks though, I feel that a sense of acceptance is settling in with friends and family.  I watch less news than I did in the beginning of the pandemic, and generally try to think of the future in only one or two week blocks so that I don't get overwhelmed by the unknown.  I go for walks outdoors with a neighbour friend or my husband.  We've started a family garden in the backyard .  My boys (19 & 21) are both working full time out of the home.  It feels good to support them so that they feel healthy and safe while out in the world.  I'm grateful that we are pulling through this tough time together.   The four of us have family dinner time everyday now--that hasn't happened in years!
